Welcome Class of 2019

After a successful interview season, we matched with Sabrina Murphy and Collin Pitts. We are thrilled to have them join us in July!

Sabrina Murphy

Sabrina Murphy grew up on the South Shore of Boston, MA. She attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada surviving frigid winters and receiving her bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences. Afterward, she attended Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, located in the West Indies. Her clinical clerkships took her cities all over the United States as well as a brief journey to the UK and provided her with experience and insight into different health systems and patient populations.

Always having been passionate about disease prevention and health maintenance, she entered a pediatric residency program at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, WI. While there she conceived and began a research project to examine academic and health outcomes in rural children who attend an after-school program. She completed two years of her pediatric residency before realizing that she could help more people by pursuing a career in public health and preventive medicine. She is currently enrolled in an online Masters of Public Health program at George Washington University which she will complete in mid-2019.

Sabrina enjoys spending time outdoors in all weather types whether gardening or snowboarding and continues to donate her time at a free medical clinic in her town. Her primary interests in preventive medicine focus on population health and improving preventive clinical services in the primary care setting.

Collin Pitts

Collin grew up near Caledonia, MN on the Mississippi River near LaCrosse, WI.  He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and graduated with B.S. in Mathematics and Chemistry. He attended University of Minnesota-Duluth Campus for medical school, and after acceptance, he commissioned in the United States Navy.  After graduation from medical school, he completed internship at Camp Pendleton, California in Family Medicine. During intern year, he decided to “go operational” and joined a Marine Corps unit in Camp Lejeune, NC as the Medical Officer for Marine Aircraft Logistics Squadron-26 (MALS-26).  During his time at MALS-26, he was more exposed to preventive medicine and public health. That initial exposure turned to immersion when he accepted orders to 2d Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment and was responsible for the health and wellness of 1000 Marines across several countries in Southeast Asia while deployed with the Unit Deployment Program.  Collin finished his service obligation as the Regimental Surgeon of 8th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division.

Collin is married with an energetic toddler and two rescue dogs.  He and his wife are excited to move back to the Midwest.

Wisconsin Partnership Program Annual Report Feature

We have been featured in the Wisconsin Partnership Program (WPP) Annual Report. The WPP’s broad vision to improve the health of people of Wisconsin, now and for years to come is carried out through investments in research, education and community partnerships. In alignment with the Wisconsin Idea, the Partnership Program reaches beyond the campus to improve health. WPP has been one of our program’s strongest financial supporter since its inception and we are so grateful to them for believing in the importance of our medical specialty.

.Jasmine Zapata (PMR ’18) and Bobby Redwood (PMR ’16) are featured in the article.

We have a new home!

warfOur Preventive Medicine Residency program has a new home on the 10th floor of WARF!

Up until this year, we have mostly resided in the Health Sciences Learning Center, but found that it was important to have a home within the Department of Population Health Sciences.

We are looking forward to spending many years to come in these spaces.

Bobby Redwood quoted in USA Today

Bobby Redwood (PMR ’16) was quoted in USA today! His quotations in the article showcase over a year of hard work from both WACEP, WHA, and others in regards to initiating Medication Assisted Treatment (Buprenorphine) in the Emergency Department. At this time they have: (1) surveyed the EM workforce in Wisconsin on the topic (2) Developed an infographic on MAT & the ED (below) (3) Scheduled/promoted X-waiver training opportunities in Wisconsin and (4) Developed a webinar to encourage MAT cooperation between primary care and emergency physicians. Phew!

Next steps are to work with key stakeholders to secure funding and develop regional streamlined care processes to make sure patients get the coordinated care they need. More work to come in 2019, but Bobby is really hopeful that they will start to stem the tide of morbidity and mortality from opioid overdoses in Wisconsin.
